South African goalkeeper Andre Arendse joined Fulham from Cape Town Spurs in the summer of 1997 but struggled to establish himself at Craven Cottage once Mohamed Al-Fayed installed Ray Wilkins as the club’s new coach in September. He was quickly usurped as first-choice custodian by new signing Maik Taylor and made only eleven senior appearances in two years with the Whites before being sold to Oxford United in July 1999.
