Promising forward Lea Barkus joined Fulham from his hometown club Reading in July 1994. He struggled for first-team game time as a result of serious back problems that had required surgery when he was with the Royals, playing sixteen teams and scoring two goals, but was forced to retire from professional football aged 22. He remains active in the game as a coach.
