Eighteen year-old winger Kenny Achampong was a favourite with the Fulham fans as soon as he scored the winner against Oxford United on his debut in February 1985. He hit 20 goals in 95 games in four years with the Whites before departing for Charlton Athletic after a row with Ray Lewington. The exciting winger was one of the major victims of Fulham’s switch to a long ball approach as Lewington struggled in the dug out but Achampong’s talent deserved better protection from the Football League referees.

He spent a season at Charlton Athletic, making ten league appearances, before moving to Leyton Orient for £25,000. Achampong scored seven goals in 83 games but was released in May 1993 after a clash with manager Peter Eustace. He went to his native Ghana, where he received an international call-up, and then trained with Olympique Marseilles, before retiring and living in Germany. He returned to London in 2011 and took his coaching badges. His son, Miracle, played for Fulham’s academy and Achampong is now coaching in Edmonton.
