Tony Gale made his Fulham debut at the age of sixteen in an Anglo-Scottish Cup win over Leyton Orient, deputising for Bobby Moore. He went on to replace the retiring World Cup winner in 1977, but really came into his own by partnering Roger Brown at the heart of Malcolm Macdonald’s defence that saw the Whites win promotion from the Third Division in 1981-82. A cultured centre back, who could pass as well as put his head in where it hurts, Gale made more than 300 appearances for the Whites, starring as they nearly completed a second successive promotion to the top flight. He joined West Ham for £200,000 in July 1984 and made more than 300 appearances at Upton Park before moving to Blackburn Rovers, where he won the Premier League in 1994/95. He is a regular co-commentator and pundit for Sky Sports and writes a regular column for Fulham’s official website.
