Malcolm Macdonald scored five goals in eleven games in a brief spell at Fulham having been signed from Tonbridge Angels by his boyhood hero Bobby Robson in 1968. He returned to become Fulham’s managing director in spring 1980 and was appointed manager in November of that year. Macdonald constructed a promotion-winning side, signing Ray Houghton on a free transfer, that played attractive football and they went so close to winning promotion to the top flight the following year. Boardroom disharmony was followed by Macdonald’s sacking in April 1984 after his private life featured in the newspapers. He is now a regular pundit on television and radio.
