Reg Matthewson was brought to Craven Cottage by Bobby Robson, who paid Sheffield United £30,000 for the central defender in February 1968. He made 174 appearances in five years at Craven Cottage, scoring a single goal. Matthewson missed only one game in the whole of the 1970-71 campaign as Fulham won promotion from Division Three under Bill Dodgin, finishing as runners up.
