Fred Callaghan was a Fulham great who made more than 300 first-team appearances for the club. He signed for Fulham as an apprentice in 1962, making his debut two years later to fill a gap left by Alan Mullery’s departure for Tottenham. He was a regular on the left flank, nicknamed ‘the Tank’ on account of his consistent running down the wing, which usually resulted in precise crosses. Callaghan stayed loyal to Fulham despite relegation and was critical as the Whites won promotion to the Second Division in 1970/71. His equaliser at the Valley ensured Fulham stayed up the following year, sending Charlton down instead, but unfortunately Callaghan’s professional career was cut short when he suffered a slipped disc in 1974. He was a popular hospitality host at Craven Cottage for many years, but sadly died in September 2022.
