Scottish goalkeeper Ian Black joined Fulham from Southampton in August 1950 after Bill Dodgin left the Saints to take over at Craven Cottage. An imposing and impressive handler, Black was brave and excellent at anticipating danger. He became the first Fulham goalkeeper to score a goal – heading home a cross from Arthur Stevens at Leicester in August 1952 after an injury crisis forced him to stand in at centre forward. Black, who won a single Scottish cap against England in April 1948, made 277 appearances for Fulham, losing his place to Tony Macedo in November 1957 and moving on two years later. He died, aged 88, in 2012.
