Reliable – and goalscoring – right winger Arthur Stevens wrote his name into Fulham folklore serving London’s oldest professional football club for more than a quarter of a century after joining the Whites on a free transfer from Sutton United in 1941. He signed professional terms in December 1943 and, after serving in the Royal Artillery and participating in the Normandy Landings in the Second World War, made his senior debut in September 1946. He was ever-present in the promotion winning side of 1948/49, scoring twelve goals. He scored consistently after Fulham’s relegation in 1952 and formed part of a formidable forward line that also included Bobby Robson, Bedford Jezzard, Johnny Haynes and Charlie Mitten.

He helped Fulham twice reach the FA Cup quarter-finals twice and scored in both semi-finals against Manchester United in 1958 with the Whites losing a Highbury replay 5-3. He lost his place to Graham Leggat in 1959 but became a coach after his retirement and was caretaker manager after the departure of Jezzard. When he finally left Craven Cottage in 1968, he ran a grocery store with his wife in Banstead and lived in Epsom until his death in 2007. Stevens made an incredible 413 first-team appearances for Fulham, scoring 124 goals.
