Denis Odoi has ended his five year spell with Fulham by joining Club Brugge tonight for a fee believed to be in the region of £585,000.
The 33 year-old defender was a hugely popular figure at Craven Cottage, famously heading Fulham to Wembley with the winner in the play-off semi final against Derby in 2018. He turned heads almost immediately after he arrived from Lokeren in 2016, with a dazzling piece of control off his back during his debut against Newcastle United.
Odoi was a consistently dependable member of the Fulham back four, playing both at right and left back before coming in at centre half as Slavisa Jokanovic’s side went on a memorable 23-match unbeaten run to finish the Championship season in 2018. The Belgian international made 177 appearances in total for the Whites, scoring seven goals, and admirably stepped in to replace Kenny Tete as Marco Silva’s men consolidated their hold on top spot in the Championship this season.
A great Fulham man – will be missed – always worked tirelessly for us, created some smart passes, assists plus the odd brilliant and timely goal, but (as we saw against Blackpool) was also constantly just a mistake away from catastrophe…highly Fulhamish!
Yes, great servant, great guy -both on and off the pitch – but just lacking the attacking qualities that we have been crying out for at full back. We wish him all the best.
Williams has shown that he is a full on threat going forward, can play at both right and left back and is just the quality signing we need. Can’t wait to see him linking with Wilson.
This has been, arguably, our quietest window of recent years but, when comparing the chaotic goings on at Bournemouth, for example, where they have virtually signed half a new team that will need to be inducted quickly and even require a change of playing philosophy, I’m not complaining.
At the very least, we now know, unequivocally, that Carvalho will not be a Fulham player come the summer but we retain his services and hope that he can overcome the inevitable disappointment of his transfer failure and not let it affect his enthusiasm – just long enough to get us across the line.
The Jasper situation is a puzzling one. Last season, he seemed more likely than Carvalho to make the breakthrough so, obviously, was highly regarded but, mysteriously, he was loaned out to Colchester-several divisions lower -where he seems to have done well. Then brought back before being loaned out to a Scottish Premier side. I just haven’t seen enough of him to make a balanced judgement but somebody obviously rates him-just not Marco Silva.
adieu notre ami Déni! Great man on and off the pitch , a workhorse , was always there when we needed him got so much unjustified stick … Wish him well back home in Belgium But also time for for younger legs and fast attacking wing backs for Marco’s style, so welcome Williams .. an astute signing if only a loan . Looks like a great link up with Wilson . Wilson & Williams Welsh Wing Wizardry
