Fulham captain Danny Murphy today put pen to paper on a new two-year contract that will keep him at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2011.
Murphy, signed from Tottenham in 2007, was one of Fulham’s most consistent performances as the Whites reached a record league high of seventh in the Premier League to qualify for Europe in May. His signature on this new contract reflects his earlier public statements that he would like to finish his career with Fulham.
Murphy is rated as a doubt for Thursday’s Europa League second leg against Amkar Perm after picking up an injury in a challenge with Ricardo Carvalho on Sunday.
Good news. Would like to see him retire a Cottager.
Yeah, I’d love for him to be groomed into a replacement for “Roy of the Fulham” in a couple of years…
While I love Danny Murphy, I worry aboutt promoting him too soon. That didn’t work out too well with the last two guys we promoted within. Bracewell was an unmitigated disaster and Coleman faded badly after a promising start. He ended up blindly sticking to formations, pissing off players and playing people out of position. Murphy would need a full grounding as a coach – maybe a few years working with the youngsters – before he’d be close to being ready to inherit the reigns.
