After Norwich sensationally sacked Bryan Gunn this afternoon, there’s some speculation that Lawrie Sanchez could be the new manager at Carrow Road. From what I can tell it is only based upon the fact that new Norwich chief executive David McNally and Sanchez were together at Fulham rather than any substantive developments linking the former Northern Ireland manager with the post.
McNally was the man blamed for installing Sanchez at the Cottage once his reign turned pear-shaped. Plenty of people were sceptical about the strength of his claim for the permanent job after one fortunate win over Liverpool and the ineptitude of our relegation rivals kept us up in 2007. The wisdom of allowing a manager so inexperienced at Premier League level to blow around £25m on players – many of whom were clearly not up to it in the top flight – must be questioned.
On the flip side, Sanchez – for all his failures at Fulham – probably has the credentials to be a good lower-league manager. His reliance on motivation and the rather direct brand of football that he brings with him probably would be pretty successful in League One. I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns up at Norwich, but I’d hope for the sake of the Canaries’ fans that they’ve got some other names on the shortlist.
