Briggs on the bench for England U21s

Despite an impressive debut against Azerbaijan on Friday, Fulham’s Matthew Briggs has had to settle for a place on the England Under-21s bench tonight for the friendly against Israel.

Stuart Pearce has made nine changes from the side that opened their Euro 2013 qualifying campaign with a thumping win over Azerbaijan at Vicarage Road and Middlesbrough defender Joe Bennett has been preferred to Briggs at left back. Everton’s Jack Rodwell captains the side at Oakwell tonight.

ENGLAND UNDER-21s XI: Amos; Wisdom, Bennett, Dawson, Baker; Rodwell, Gosling, Barkley, Shelvey; Waghorn, Sordell. Subs: Rudd, Briggs, Smith, Flanaghan, Caulker, Gardner, Chamberlain, Delfouneso, Wickham, Lansbury, Butland.

Smalling on the bench for England U21s

Chris Smalling has been named as one of the substitutes in England’s Under-21 international friendly in Holland tonight. The uncapped Fulham centre back was a surprise inclusion in Stuart Pearce’s first squad since the Under-21 Championships in Sweden this summer.

UPDATE: It’s currently 0-0 in Groningen. You can follow the action via the FA’s text commentary.
