Harry Wilson was delighted to open the scoring in Fulham’s latest pre-season friendly victory with a move that came straight off the training ground.
The Welsh international scored twice in the first half to inspire the Whites to an impressive 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest in Faro tonight and his first goal saw him latch onto a superb ball from the back by Calvin Bassey. The winger told FFCTV afterwards that his Motspur Park chats with the Nigerian centre half had paid dividends:
“It was a really nice goal. I think me and Calvin have been speaking in training about if I’m in that position – between the full back and the centre half – I have to see if he can find me because we all know he’s good at that diag. We’ve been speaking about getting me in on goal, so for that to come off was great. The ball was perfect. I had to make sure that I bought it down in my stride and then I was able to lift it over the keeper.”
Wilson doubled Fulham’s lead four minutes later with a 20-yard free-kick, but admitted that he hadn’t caught the strike cleanly at all.
“It’s been a while since I scored one actually – so it was nice to see it go in! I didn’t catch it quite as I wanted to. It went in the corner I wanted it to go in but it wasn’t caught as cleanly as what I wanted but it ended up in the back of the net and that’s the main thing.”
Fulham’s matchwinner was pleased with his 45 minute cameo, especially as he Josh King and Emile Smith Rowe posed plenty of problems for Premier League opponents operating as the starting trio behind lone striker Rodrigo Muniz.
It was pretty hot, so we knew that we wanted to stay on the ball, move the ball about and try and make them work and then when the gaps appeared, make sure that we exploited them. I think Kingy found some really good positions, Emile on the other side coming off the left and we able to make good runs. We found each other in the half space a lot, created a lot of chances and on another day we might have scored a couple more.”
