Fulham midfielder Josh King scored before England’s under 19s roared back from 5-1 down to draw their second U19 Euros group game 5-5 with Germany in Bucharest tonight.

King brought England back into the game with his side 2-0 down following German goals by Noah Darvich and El Mala but the young Lions looked to be destined for a mauling when their opponents scored three times without reply. Max Moerstedt, Leopold Wurm and El Mala’s second put the Germans 5-1 up three minutes after half time.

But a stunning comeback – featuring four goals from the Young Lions in an incredible eleven-minute spell – changed the complexion of the game and the group. Ethan Wheatley turned in a corner to make it 5-2 and Reiss Russell-Denny’s drive just three minutes later further reduced the deficit.

Zach Abbott headed home from a corner to make it 5-4 before Jesse Derry equalised after Germany goalkeeper Konstantin Heide had failed to hold Kaden Young’s cross. The dramatic draw, which is the highest scoring game in the history of the UEFA competition, means that England head into Friday evening’s final round of group fixtures still in with a chance of qualifying.

Will Antwi’s side take on group leaders the Netherlands – who have already qualified with two wins from their two games – needing to better Germany’s result against Norway to make the semi-finals.
