Fulham forward Raul Jimenez found the net as Mexico opened their Gold Cup campaign with an entertaining 3-2 win over the Dominican Republic in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

After Edson Alvarez’s header opened the scoring, Jimenez doubled El Tri’s lead with a smart finish through the goalkeeper’s legs after latching onto a through ball from strike partner Santiago Giménez. Jimenez’s strike was his 40th for his country and he now sits third on the all-time list of Mexico’s leading goalscorers.

Peter Gonzalez brought the Dominican Republic right back into it, before César Montes restored Mexico’s two-goal cushion straight afterwards. Edison Azcona scored a second for the Dominicans midway through the second half, but the defending champions held on to secure a nervy three points. Jimenez played 83 minutes before being substituted by César Huerta.
