Fulham forward Raul Jimenez played just over an hour as Mexico beat Suriname 2-0 overnight to secure their spot in the second round of the Gold Cup.

The defending champions, who beat the Dominican Republic in their opening game on Sunday when Jimenez scored his 40th international goal, were frustrated for almost an hour by Suriname before a brace in the space of five second half minutes from Cesar Montes put El Tri on course for victory.

Mexico and Costa Rica have qualified from Group A with maximum points from their first two matches. The pair will meet on Sunday to decide who progresses to the knockout phase as group winners.
