Fulham’s 2024/2025 campaigned contained plenty of magic moments and Marco Silva’s side were much more competitive at the top end of the table that many of us predicted back in August. The season ended with a whimper, which was disappointing after the Whites were in with a shot of returning to Wembley in the FA Cup as well as qualifying for Europe, but Silva’s accent on adventurous football delivered a number of memorable matches.
Picking a player of the season has been tough sometimes over the past decade or so – especially when very few players have shone as Fulham fell through the relegation trap door. This year’s decision is trickier for far more pleasing reasons as so many players have performed particularly well as Silva’s side have surprised the big names. Were it not for the knee injury that eventually required surgery rampaging full-back Antonee Robinson would have probably won at a canter. Calvin Bassey’s commanding displays at the back are definitely worthy of commendation, whilst the work ethic of Raul Jimenez and all those glorious goals from Rodrigo Muniz must bring the Brazilian into contention.
Alex Iwobi contributed a number of goals and assists from a variety of positions before the Nigerian ran himself into the ground, whilst Ryan Sessegnon’s remarkably return was probably the feelgood story of the season. Sasa Lukic had another strong season – especially after being asked to play a different role after the departure of Joao Palhinha – whilst Sander Berge added both bite and discipline to the engine room. Last but not least, who could forget Harry Wilson? The Welsh winger’s run of goals in London derbies was incredible and there’s a compelling case to be made that if he hadn’t broken his metatarsal against Manchester United in January we might all be updating our passports now.
This article can’t list all the contenders – so let us know who you’d vote for and why below.
Calvin Bassey
Commitment, character and positivity. Will make a good captain.
If anyone of the ones you mentioned get I would not complain very much hard to choose but I’m going for Bassey
For me Calvin Bassey.
Think Leno has had another good season too
You know who I’d vote for: Who put the ball in the Brentford net? Harry ******* Wilson! I can’t wait to see what he does beginning in August!
Bassey. Consistent pretty much every game and he played almost every game
Not a shout out for Leno? He deserves a nod for both his crucial saves, but also his de facto leadership. He’s very much the adult that the team needs.
Yeh Leno !
I’m glad Jimenez got a mention. He makes an incredible effort in every minute he’s on the pitch and has made the difference in a number of games. You can see the frustration in his face when he gets substituted as he wants to continue giving his all for Fulham. He’s a leader with his teammates as well.
What about me?
My vote is for Sess! It’s a joy to see him back at the Cottage and he brings a fantastic team spirit. He’s made the difference in key games, and we’ll always wonder ‘what if’ at Southampton.
I wondered about Leno. Yes, not perfection but deflections are not his fault and penalties (mostly). Plus all other contenders have made errors but have more playing time to mask them with lots of good things.
Robinson. Proved again best all round left back in division. In today’s football he offers both defensive and attacking attributes which is rare as most are either one or the other. Bassey solid. Iwobi Mr Consistent.
how can you split? but must vote for Bernd and Sess close second.
Calvin Bassey for me. Strong, fast and commanding all season long.
My thought’s are it must be ROBINSON with honourable mentions to Bassey and Leno
Leno for me. Good Lord preserve us if he gets hurt.
Raul Jimenez. Always gives 100%. Never stops running. 12 goals which would have been more with decent crosses and quality from midfield.
All the above mentioned plus Leno could be named but for me because he changed games when he played my vote goes To Sess who’s back where he is loved and Raul second for his goals which could have been more if the service was better.
Head says Leno.
Heart says welcome back Ryan Sessegnon. These returns to an old club rarely end up as a positive, but so happy this appears to be the exception to the rule.
KL, you’re right. If Leno gets hurt it’s going to be the goalkeeper on display against Wigan!
So many contenders.
Despite some criticism, Super Bernd made some fantastic stops and kept us in games.
Then there’s Bassey, solid as a rock, reliable and occasionally channelling his inner Franco Baresi and charging up the pitch.
Robbo was excellent. An almost ever present and owning our left side in most games, despite his injury.
Iwobi faded a bit, like a few others, due to the amount of games he played. When at his peak, he was reliable in whichever position he was picked/moved to. Almost as versatile as BDR used to be.
Then there have to be honourable mentions: Timmy C for playing through injury for months, with not a word to fans who were criticising his performances. A trooper.
And Sasa, who I would have let go last Summer, which shows what I know. If there were a most improved player award, he’d take it hands down. He just quietly goes about his business, nothing flash, but keeps it all ticking away in midfield. It was like having a new signing this season.
Overall, I think my choice would have to be Leno. Some excellent reflex saves at point blank, the one in the dying minutes of the home game against Hounslow sticks in my memory. His penalty saves against Man U in the Cup and Bus Stop FC a couple of weeks ago were phenomenal. Big saves change games as much as goals do. I can’t think of any keeper in the Prem who’d be an improvement.
And non-playing player of the season has to be Gentleman Jim. His commentaries are how club commentators should sound, completely biased and passionate. And a local accent, not some posh, bland media type. GJ completely losing it when H scored the winner at home to Bus Stop FC was my moment of the season.
Lukic for me was a cut above until he got injured, Bassey for his consistency, seeing that hulk making those poweful runs upfield was a sight.
