Former Fulham winger Alex Kacaniklic has confirmed to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that he has retired from football aged 33.

The Swedish international scored thirteen goals in a century of appearances for Fulham between 2010 and 2012 having moved from Liverpool as a youngster alongside Lauri Dalla Valle to play in the club’s under-18 side. Kacaniklic was recalled early from a loan spell with Watford and made his debut as a substitute for the injured Pavel Pogrebnyak, just 35 minutes into a match against Norwich City in March 2012. He almost scored with a fierce drive that was tipped onto the crossbar by John Ruddy.

Kacanklic was frozen out by Felix Magath following Fulham’s relegation from the Premier League and, after a loan spell with FC Copenhagen, he signed for Nantes after being released by Fulham. The left winger spent two years with Hammarby in the Allsvenskan before signing with Hajduk Split. He joined Limassol on a free transfer in 2023, but a cruciate knee ligament injury saw Kacanklic spent most of his time on the sidelines.

Confirming his decision to retire, Kacanklic – who 33 caps for Sweden and scored three goals, told Sportbladet that playing for Fulham was the highlight of his career.

“That’s the highlight for sure, along with having represented Sweden. It was great to play in the Premier League, score some goals and compete with some of the world’s best players and clubs. It’s fun to sit back and think about it now. Everything you’ve been through and cities you’ve lived in.@
