Marco Silva felt Fulham deserved to win after the Whites battled to a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.
Silva watched his side largely dominate an absorbing game but fail to take their chances and fall behind to a predatory strike from Brenan Johnson. Substitute Tom Cairney levelled with a lovely finish but was then sent off for a late tackle on Dejan Kulusevski and the visitors had to hold on with ten men.
Speaking to Match of the Day after the final whistle, Silva said:
“I think that everybody should recognise that the team who deserved to win this afternoon was ourselves. We deserved to win. We played our way, with our identity, on the pitch. Myself, the players and the fans should be proud of it. We should have been leading the score with the chances we had. We have to be realistic, Tottenham had chances as well.”
He sprung to the defence of captain Cairney.
“Firstly, I know him. Tom Cairney is not the player for that, everybody knows. I have to be realistic and honest with you, everybody knows I am the first one asking him to be more aggressive in the right way, to keep some principles as a midfielder in that situation, but he is not the type of player to do that type of thing. He stamped on his leg and, of course, looking through the images it should be a red card and we have to accept it, knowing that Tom Cairney was really unlucky because he is not that type of player.”
The Fulham head coach was proud of his players’ response after going down to ten men.
“What a reaction from us. The reaction was good – fifteen minutes with ten men and the reality is that Tottenham didn’t create one chance.”
Good point !! Anytime you take a point from home is good !!.Could have won it !! Carney sent off was unlucky and Silva was right not to play Perrirra after his comments in the media !!
Silva should know by now that you don’t always get what you deserve, football is no different. Every game we are so wasteful in front of goal or go to sleep when defending. In this league they take no prisoners, as we have found out to our cost.
We need a striker this T/W and get him quickly not wait until 11.00 pm on 31st.
3 observations
ESR -the invisible man … Heading towards worst purchase in Fulham history . He did nothing in this game as is increasingly the case. Let’s hope Silva can solve this one
AP – he was missed . Loads more creativity and hard work than ESR Let’s hope his comments were taken out of context
– We need a clinical top class striker .
Aside from the above , the Team and manager are probably the best we have ever had. .
Jiminez wasted 2 clear chances and we really need a top class striker, we also need to improve our deadball and corner kicks as we never score from either. It was a lovely goal from Cairney but he then ruined it all by getting sent off for a stupid tackle. Why doesn’t Silva give our youngsters a chance they can’t be any worse than a couple of our current squad.
Excellent performance that deserved more. Best midfield I have seen this season, including ESR. Great to see corners clearing the first man for a change. I know he should finish more but Jiminez is the best weve got at the moment and you can never fault him for commitment and effort he puts in every time he pulls the shirt on. Just wish his luck would change.
I don’t understand all the negativity and whinging. We are not one of those teams with seemingly bottomless pockets but every week we go out and go toe to toe with them. We are no longer Fulham the pushovers and always play our attractive brand of football. I consider it a privilege to watch my team. It’s such a great feeling turning up and not fearing a loss. More of the same Marco! I
Well said C.B. We should enjoy it while we can. Are we not “You lucky people”?
I would like to see it back but I can’t understand why Jedi, after a poor cross that gave Spurs the opportunity to break, did not chase back. This allowed Johnson to be totally unmarked for the duration of the break and the time it took Werner to make his cross for their goal.
Very unlike Robinson. Was he injured?
After a nervy start, we set about showing that we are more than a match for any team in this division and outplayed Spurs creating chance after chance.
Even at the start of the 2nd half, we had three good chances before they scored.
Tom Cairney’s equaliser was magnificent but he was badly caught in possession and, in trying to amend for his error, he committed an ugly foul but, IMO, it didn’t warrant a red.
Somehow, we have to convert more of our chances. Jiminez isn’t having any joy at the minute but, in an ideal world, could have added several more to his overall tally, this season. He works his butt off but…
Emile Smith Rowe is a conundrum. For twenty minutes, he contributed nothing. Then, he livened up but, shortly after, lapsed again.
Frustrating for us, yet again, in a game that should have brought us all three points.
Fulham finishing versus chances must be bottom 3 in the PL. Really poor.
Really tough run coming up playing the top 4 in next 5 games. The Brighton game on Thursday is very important as the other 3 (Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea) will all be losses.
So many people with half empty glasses. Special mention for Diop.I’ve never been a fan of his but the times he’s come into the team he has been flawless. As for Robinson, normally when he goes on his runs a midfield will drop in to cover him. This didn’t happen when we conceeded Sunday.
Unlike Hank I’m looking forward to the next 4 games, going toe to toe with the best and I think we may well cause an upset.
