Marco Silva was delighted for Harry Wilson after the Welsh winger came off the bench to tilt the west London derby in Fulham’s favour with a dramatic stoppage-time double.
The Fulham head coach admitted that Wilson hasn’t had the playing time he has sought this season but praised the Welsh international’s attitude after the former Liverpool man inspired Fulham’s late, late comeback.
Silva said:
“It’s been a tough season for him and Harry wants to play more, he’s not getting the minutes he wanted. It’s not easy to find space for everybody but he’s on fire for the national team and in a Fulham shirt we knew he is capable. He needs to wait and be patient and when he gets a chance he needed to take it, he had a great night and this is the most important thing. I know him very well. I think he was my first signing at the club and he’s been important for us. I congratulated him and he deserves this moment.”
The Portuguese boss was adamant that his side fully deserved the victory.
“We deserved the three points, no doubts about it. It summed up our season so far, we were dominant, we were the best team and created more. They didn’t have anything until that moment (Janelt goal) from 25 yards and they scored, we didn’t lose the confidence and we tried pushing them back and had many ways to score.
“The result was unfair for some time, I told the players to keep pushing and I have to give praise to Brentford, they defended hard in their box. The reality is we didn’t give up. We put Harry Wilson in a different position and we let him be closer to Rodrigo (Muniz) and he has good timing into the box.”
Was surprised at how negative Brentford were from the start. In the second half they seemed happy to sit back and play like a team reduced to ten men. Thought I must have missed the red card.Or maybe we were just too good for them. No complaints about our substitutions tonight either.
Yes, quite a few players now having to be patient and await their opportunity, Wilson foremost among them. It must be very hard, especially when you are considered such an integral part of your national team. To be brutally honest though, for a long time, Wilson was one of the first names on the team sheet and failed to produce the goods with most teams having figured out his propensity for cutting inside rather than taking a fullback on, on the outside. Maybe, playing as more of a striker support is a better position for him. Who knows? He deserved his moment of glory, tonight, though, but I fully expect him to be back on the bench against Palace.
We didn’t deserve any points! Silva should stop talking about “deserved” victories. If we don’t get the points it’s our own fault.
Perhaps it’s Silva’s tactics are to encourage the squad to feel they are less guaranteed a starting spot week in, week out. Pereira is a prime example of this. He needs to be benched, along with his ego and brought down to earth. He may realise he’s not as good as he thinks he is and needs to work like other members of the squad.
Wilson has suffered this treatment and hey ho, it worked.
Rasmus , you were at the match last night?
It is in your hands Silva. I would suggest you start by dropping Pereira.
Rasmus was unable to make it to the game last night because he was on another planet.
Hey Rasmus didn’t you notice we were the team in white. Nights like that are what footballs all about. Berger brilliant at Everton and again last night. I think when Lukic comes back, Pereira should be benched or left out completely
Great finish to the game, I woke up the whole house with my yelling.
Almost made up for the last minute shockers versus ManU, West Ham, Everton resulting in 5 dropped points. Almost but not quite.
Fulham dominated the game and deserved to win but 26 shots (24 prior to the goals) means the finishing is very poor with this team. Some feeble efforts on goal from a number of players.
At Last we scored last minutes goals rather than conceding them. What a fantastic finish. We should have had the game won long before then but powder puff finishing let us down again. Apart from the obvious Harry Wilson I thought Nelson had a great game and is worthy of another start. Berger looks much more settled. Iwobi seemed to wake up once he came off the wing later in the game. A couple of small negatives against numerous positives. I still cannot understand why Pereira starts or at very least he should be relieved of free kicks and corner duties. His delivery is terrible. EMR obviously has massive talent, but tends to fade after half time and was fairly anonymous in the second half. I don’t think he has stayed on the pitch without bring substituted later in matches. Finally if he does not start Traore is the best impact substitute I can remember at our club for a long time. It will be nice when Lukic is fit again, presumably after the international break
