The curse of the international break strikes again for Fulham, so fluent a fortnight ago at Crystal Palace, who surrendered a winning position in the sort of fashion that will make Marco Silva seethe. A sumptuous strike from Alex Iwobi looked to have put the Whites en route to a third win in a row, but the Cottagers reckoned without Wolves’ renewed resolve and style. A raking pass from former Fulham midfielder Mario Lemina, deployed as a third centre back, set up an equaliser for the classy Matheus Cunha, who made a second superbly for Joao Gomes and curled in a majestic third. The visiting fans roared their approval as Gary O’Neil’s outfit added a fourth in added time through substitute Goncalo Guedes as their old gold heroes climbed out of the bottom three.
It was a catastrophic collapse for Fulham, who played the last twenty minutes with ten men after Joachim Andersen sustained a calf injury once Silva had sent on five substitutes. The hosts began by far the stronger side with former Wolves forward Raul Jimenez the fore. The Mexican blotted his copybook, though, when he somehow struck the frame of goal from two yards out after Antonee Robinson had prodded a pinpoint ball across an open goal. The Craven Cottage faithful were still shaking their heads at that miss when Iwobi swept a sweet strike into Jose Sa’s top corner from twenty yards to give the Cottagers a merited lead.
Wolves went close when Cunha galloped into the penalty area only for Joao Gomes to try and measure a cross rather than go for goal himself, allowing Calvin Bassey to clear the danger. The hosts reprieve was short-lived when Lemina, a livewire on loan in the 2020/2021 campaign, drifted a delightful pass between Andersen and Bassey. Cunha seized his chance expertly, cushioning the ball beautifully and caressing a finish past the stranded Bernd Leno in an instant. There could be questions about the dozy defending and Leno’s slowness to assess the danger, but not about the quality of the finish.
Silva’s side sought to up the ante after half time, but they were caught out by a cleverly constructed Wolves’ counter-attack. Cunha crept into the penalty area after the Whites failed to clear the danger and his delightfully disguised reverse pass found Gomes in space. The midfielder found the far corner with a lovely, left-footed finish to give the visitors the lead.
Silva sent on Harry Wilson and Tom Cairney to try and turn the tide. Wilson almost reprised his immediate impact against Brentford and Crystal Palace, but his dipping drive from distance clipped the crossbar – and that was as close as Fulham came to another comeback. Their hopes of a point were hindered by Andersen’s early departure after Silva had gambled with a further triple change, which left the hosts a man down and short staffed at the back.
The Whites poured forward in search of a late leveller, but were undone by another piece of Cunha magic after Gomes had driven wide from a promising position. The Brazilian bent a brilliant finish around Leno from 20 yards, finding the top corner fantastically, and peeled away to celebrate in front of the delirious away support. The man who has scored an incredible seventeen goals – and contributed nine assists – in his last 29 league starts left the field to a standing ovation in stoppage time, but Wolves weren’t finished. They added a fourth in the fifth minute of added time as Guedes surged away from the remnants of a beleaguered back three and fired past Leno to underscore how far Fulham had fallen from their first half dominance.
Silva scratched his head on the sideline – bemused at how this game had got away from his side. Fulham had only mustered a single point after an international break this term and they will need to be far more durable when they head to Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday.

It was a very bold move from Marco to make 5 changes with so long to go. We could have gone on and drawn or maybe even won the game but sadly, the move backfired when Andersen had to go off injured. The last two goals probably wouldn’t have happened if Andersen was still on the pitch but overall, Wolves deserved the win. I thought their passing and movement was excellent.
I must say that I totally adore Silva but today he was at fault. He should not have put in Cairney when we were chasing the result, immediately our play became slower and more predictable. Cairney is good in holding up play but his passing has become always lateral and his pace too slow. Nelson was having trouble on the left resorting to his oitside right foot to cross the ball, Silva should have put in the in form Wilson earlier. Then to complete the comedy of errors, substituting all 5 options with a quarter of an hour to go and getting heavily punished playing with 10 men and a heavily unbalanced team. Today was really not our day. Pity, our first 30mins were quite good.
Anybody know why Berge was not in the squad? Presumably he would have played instead of Lukic who would inevitably have been ring-rusty. Everyone has been moaning about Silva making substitutions too late and now he’s being criticised for being too hasty. Not easy being a football manager.
Spurs thumped City today, so they should be there for the taking!

You guys will be fine this season and are going in the right direction with some good players but today I think you were simply beaten by the better team on the day. Wolves fan in peace. P.S. play Adama more!
Bottom line -Wolves are actually a decent, attacking side and their position in the table was not a true reflection of their ability.
It’s their defence that has been vulnerable. Yet, even with so many defensive injuries, they looked well up for the task today and, truth be told, we created next to nothing.
Pretty sure we will bounce back from this result. Smith Rowe seems to react positively after a poor performance. Just hope that Andersen’s injury is not serious.
Truth is he rarely seems to get his substitutions right. Easy for me to say, but it is what we regularly see. Presumably a manger has to react to the circumstances, state of play and conditions, not easy, but you’d expect better from a good coach. I wonder are we missing Boa Morte on the touch line?
