Marco Silva was disappointed that Fulham again failed to take their chances as the Whites went out of the League Cup at Preston North End – losing an epic penalty shoot-out 16-15.

The Fulham boss lamented his side’s failure to be clinical in the final third once more as they failed to make their dominance of possession and territory count at Deepdale before being edged out after the shoot-out stretched to a record-breaking 34 spot-kicks.

Silva told his post-match press conference:

“I think, when there are games to go penalties, it’s about confidence. But, the game got tight. I thought we did enough in [the] 95 minutes to win the game. From the first minute, we took control of the game and I think we created enough chances to score more goals. That is the situation.

We created two or three chances that we should have scored. One rebound in that moment on the edge of the box and they scored. A very good reaction from us second-half. We took control of the game all second half. A good goal from us.

[We had plenty of] chances again, lots of crosses and moments where we should’ve scored. They scored more [penalties] than us, now they’re playing in the next round. We had the desire and ambition to be there through the game. Unfortunately for us, we weren’t clinical and we didn’t score.”

The Fulham boss highlighted Ryan Sessegnon’s performance and the way he created Reiss Nelson’s equaliser as a positive.

“It was a very good run from Sess.  I think he’s improving, he’s getting better. From the first minute until the last minute, he kept composure always. He was strong defensively and, of course, offensively we know that he is capable to do. It’s important for him to get the confidence he needs because all of us know the quality that he has.”
