Joao Palhinha helped Portugal reach the second round of the European Championships this afternoon as Roberto Martinez’s side comfortably beat Turkey 3-0 in Dortmund.
The Fulham midfielder came into the side as one of a number changes after the Portuguese had to come from behind to secure a stoppage-time win over Czech Republic in their first Group F fixture last weekend and assumed his usual role in the engine room. Palhinha took an early knock after a hefty challenge and was booked on the stroke of half time before being replaced by Ruben Neves.
Manchester City’s Bernado Silva opened the scoring before a dreadful defensive mix-up saw Samet Akaydin double Portugal’s lead by passing the ball beyond his own goalkeeper. Bruno Fernandes made it three before the hour mark to ensure Portugal booked their place in the last sixteen.
