A late winner from Callum Osmand ensured Fulham edged a five-goal thriller against Newcastle United to win their first ever fixture in the Premier League Cup at Motspur Park this afternoon.
The Welsh youth international headed home a cross from lively left winger Lemar Gordon with five minutes to play to ensure the young Whites saw off a spirited challenge from the Magpies. Ealing-born wide man Gordon did brilliantly to work a yard of space by beating his man out wide and whipped over an inviting cross that the unmarked Osmand headed into the net from five yards out.
Ali Melloul’s side had taken the lead just before the half hour mark when Ma’kel Bogle-Campbell’s free-kick beat Newcastle goalkeeper Aidan Harris from twenty yards with the aid of a deflection. The visitors equalised two minutes into first half stoppage time through Luke Craggs’ header at the far post after Fulham had failed to deal with a well-worked corner routine.
Irish midfielder Tom Olyott put Fulham back ahead from the penalty spot midway through the second half after Josh King had been brought down in the penalty area. Olyott stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with a precise penalty. But the Whites needed Osmand’s late winner after midfielder Darren Palmer scored a second equaliser for United, converting a cross from substitute Matheos Ferreira when the visitors produced a brilliant break from a Fulham corner.
