Republic of Ireland international defender Shane Duffy has signed for Fulham on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, the club have confirmed this morning.
The 30 year-old, who has made 150 appearances for the Seagulls and helped Albion establish themselves in the top flight after winning promotion from the Championship in his first season at the AMEX, should be available for tomorrow lunchtime’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Craven Cottage. Duffy, who was part of the Ireland squad at Euro 2016 and played in the 1-0 win over Italy, helped Brighton finish ninth in the Premier League last season having the Scottish Cup on loan at Celtic in the previous campaign.
Fulham’s new signing told FFCTV:
I’m delighted. It’s a really exciting challenge for me and the club, one I’m really looking forward to.”
A Centre Back this was a bit out of the blue and a Proven Premiership player can he play tomorrow though also I do hope he is not the only CB we sign watched this lad a few times big tough Irishman should rattle a few Strikers hopefully if it comes off then maybe a permanent deal who knows
From what I’ve gleaned so far he will be a slight upgrade on Ream but only just and putting him straight in the team tomorrow would be madness.
My expectation (hope) is he is an injury back up for Tosin, and either of the two better CBs we are still to recruit, but I won’t be holding my breath on that!
Dreadful at Celtic absolute panic Loan not a good sign
As we only have two centre backs on our books it is better than nothing and hopefully just a stop gap signing. He has good heading ability but is not a technical player .I live in hope we will eventually sign a central back who has much ability. I the meantime and circumstances I believe we must be thankful for anything even Duffy, He is a 100% committed player so lets not pre judge and give him our support
IMHO Duffy is a decent backup for CB position.
I see it a good deal, someone experienced, professional, and ready to play when it’s necessary. He’d be my 3rd alternative at the position, Ream 4th.
Now let’s see if they can get the Diop deal done asap, but Duffy gives us an extra time to get the right price with no hurry!
Agree with everyone. We need 4 CBs. Realistically this guy will be back up to Tosin and someone like Diop. I sincerely hope this isn’t viewed as the final CB solution. If we’re still going for Diop or Nat Phillips then this guy will be good cover. Fingers crossed the club knows it still needs to bring in a CB that is an upgrade on what we have. At least the immediate short term panic for this position is over…but…let’s be honest this wasn’t in the plan.
Anyone would be better than Ream who is past his best and has previous in this division.
Here we go just as predicted panic loan of players that can’t make a mid-table team and Willian are we sure he was useless at Arsenal a real primma-Donna no effort and no class. Much sooner pay £8.5m for Kluivert . Still need two quality centre backs and a good replacement for Wilson who looks like being out for weeks. So some back up for Mitro, Muniz won’t cut it in the premier league
