Fulham fans all across the world will have been brought out in a cold sweat last night when the news filtered through that Hertha Berlin, second bottom of the Bundesliga, have turned to Felix Magath to try and save them from relegation. Magath’s reputation as a firefighter who had never been relegated didn’t survive a dismal spell at Craven Cottage, where his Fulham side went down from the Premier League and looked in danger of a second successive relegation from the Championship when he was sacked in September 2014 after taking a single point from the first seven fixtures.
Worryingly, Hertha Berlin believe Magath’s record ‘speaks for itself’. Perhaps even more concerning is this afternoon’s news that Mark Fotheringham, who played three senior games during his own uninspiring spell under Magath at Craven Cottage, has been confirmed as the German’s assistant. I’m not going to run through Magath’s lowlights whilst with Fulham – the memories are simply too painful.
We wish Hertha Berlin all the luck in the world – they may need it.
