Fulham have submitted an offer for Sassuolo centre back Marlon, according to reports from Italy this afternoon.
Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali told Sky Sport Italia:
‘We had an offer from Fulham, an important one, so we are evaluating it and the negotiations are in progress. We’ll see over the next couple of days if we can conclude them’.
The 25 year-old defender has been left on the pitch for Napoli’s Serie A opener against Cagliari. The Italian press believe Fulham’s offer to around £14m, although the Brazilian’s former club would be due half of the transfer fee as part of the deal that took Marlon to Italy two summers ago.
The 6ft centre half, who came through the Fluminense youth academy, made three senior appearances at the Nou Camp and was loaned to French side Nice for the 2017/18 season. He has played 41 times in two seasons with Sassuolo, scoring one goal. Fulham’s need for reinforcements in central defence was underlined by their dreadful defending in a 4-3 defeat at Leeds yesterday, which followed a 3-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal on the opening day of the season.
Is he an upgrade on what we have, watched some highlights and he has pretty good on the ball skills and short and long range passing, intercepts and reads well but not a speed merchant!!
It Is a start. Not my first choice but would seem better than any players for central defence positions, we presently have on our books.
Hmmm feels like a desperation move. Everyone knows this position should have been sorted pre-season. I hope it works out but if he isn’t quick then he won’t succeed in the EPL.
Watched some highlights, not impressed. Scored with a long range shot but looked ponderous, hesitant and was beaten in the air which led to an easy tap in, he’ll fit into our current setup perfectly.
Looks like a good move to me – in the circumstances. Don;t want to fill the squad with not-quite-there players, but this guy has skills and a point to prove. What’s his English like?
Are we sure his valuation is 5 million. Press say Fulham have offered £15 million. Waited 3 Seasons to bring in central defenders. This looks like a panic signing.
This smacks of desperation to me-probably registered favourably on Tony Khan’s football manager spreadsheet. The only way forward is for the club to buy proven quality, which hopefully as a by product, will create competition and a higher level of defensive application within the squad. You only have to look at the effect that Hangeland had on the squad when Roy brought him in.
What has happened to the other center back we were looking at but it’s a start
A positive but surely not a £15M footballer!
And there you have it, sign someone sign someone, then when they try to do so ‘he’s not good enough’, are any of you eufa coaches, club scouts, professional accessors, !! If not give it a rest and let’s see where it leads us.
It was only a few weeks ago the club was rumoured to be after Gerard Pique, prompting Tony Khan to make an announcement that this was not the case. Instead we now hear that the club has made an offer for Marlon Santos, the very same Marlon now at Sassuolo who played for Barca back in 2016, making his debut for Barca by coming on as a sub for Gerard Pique!! Well if you can’t get the organ grinder get the monkey! In fact this guy in my humble opinion is an UPGRADE to what we have at present, it’s a long awaited start in the right direction and if he signs we need another CB to work alongside him. As already been said a situation most of us hoped would have been sorted by now, delayed maybe due to our original target from Benfica being held back by their President, can think of another title for him! In the meantime keep the faith, it’s too early for the moans….did someone say we played our 2nd game of the season???
T.Khan & co attracting a couple of decent defenders is much easier when you have a dream to sell.
That would be, as we all say, before the reality of what one is joining is laid bare. That is not clever wheeling and dealing. Last ‘minuteism’ has a time and a place. The Fulham F C centre back hunting ground is not it!
Now, we are not going to get what Scottie P wants and needs. Any manager will be a victim of our owner’s obsessions in deal making until light dawns. That, I fear, may not even be when we disappear straight back down. I do hope I’m wrong.
No one knew who Hangeland was before he came. Give the guy a chance. Jeez!
I agree with Thomas Carter give the guy a chance we have signed many players we did not know before and they have mostly turned out OK
I disegree we are now trying to get a position filled which should have been a priority before the season started I don’t have any faith in Tony Khans judgment of good signings he is now panic buying to cover his own inability to do the job he isn’t capable of doing
Agree with the comments but recently it’s been all speculation Keep hearing We are going for him or this player then it dies down if we were a top six club these players would come here this is my worry,Tah is a good player TK should be sleeping on his doorstep and pull out all the stops to get him with another class CB maybe Bremen the Brazilian lets go for the tops and not second best Also Tah will kick a few arses, let’s do it we have the money also Anguissa looks good in CM
Hopefully Chris Smalling is still in contention. The rumour mill seems to have gone quiet in his transfer from United but he isn’t in their plans and Roma can’t afford €20m!
Why not pick a player who has played in the Premier league? Smalling? Foyth? Lascelles? Rojo?
It’s been obvious since we were last in the PL that quality centre backs were needed. The championship season demonstrated that we needed quality centre backs. Two games into the new season and we still need quality centre backs. Why have we waited, why wasn’t their a plan to buy or loan as soon as the season ended, cost of relegation outweighs the cost of buying and staying up (and yes I know close season was short). Tbh never mind quality, I’d settle for centre backs that can jump, hold position and mark and don’t have MOTD pundits shaking their heads in amusement.
Foyth rumour after him to. People keep saying Smalling he as said he’s not interested in lower halve of Premiership . The haggle between Man U and Roma will end in last min loan , because Smalling won’t go anywhere else, and want players who want to come
People need to stop banging on about Smalling. He’s overpriced and overpaid. Still makes the same mistakes at 30 as he did at 19. Not worth close to £20m, and Roma know it, so we should too.
As for this guy, don’t know him, obviously, same as everyone else. Honestly, on paper, this sounds like a second choice signing because we can’t get Tah or Bremer, but perhaps he’s better than that.
I just don’t think we have the budget to stay up. Great getting promoted but I know I’d have enjoyed a season in the Championship more. We just won’t spend the money on Lewis Dunk types of player – Brighton went up and sorted a strong defence. Our defence just isn’t Premiership quality.
I’d definitely prefer premiership experience or insanely good like Pique (lol). Can’t afford to mess about.
History repeating season back to the Championship.
Hey ho keep the faith COYW
We need a central defender who will fit in quickly. Foyth from Spurs looks to be a good choice. Someone who sperk Rnglish would help. Also must have some pace all our central defenders are slouches and a ball over the top always catches us out Marion from Italy reeks of desperation. Maybe Ok for a back up gamble at 2 million but no more. The question of central defenders has bee hanging over the club for over 2 years and still no further forward. Hector looked great in the Championship but is struggling in the Premiership
would much prefer bremer. weve been linked to smalling and tah who if we signed both would transform our defense and have no clue why we havent tried to sign Fikayo Tomori on loan
Interesting reading, however 39 goals scored in 8 games at the weekend, seems like nobody can defend, obviously we need a couple of CB’s but what about a DEFENSIVE COACH that might make a big difference
After watching the Villa game which was so embarrassing and then reading the rubbish coming out of Tony Khans mouth I feel sick, Jamie Carragher was spot on about his comments of Dadies boy who hasn’t got a clue about football matters, he is even trying to pass the blame on to Parker, I see now we are being linked to old players who can’t even get into their own team Tony Khan resign now and get a proper football man in to try and save our Club you have had plenty of time to change things around and have failed miserably so let someone else with football knowledge try to salvage our season before it is too late, go please go now as nobody has any trust in you.
