Tottenham Hotspur have signed Fulham winger Ryan Sessegnon for an initial £25m – with Josh Onomah moving to Craven Cottage as part of the deal.
The 19 year-old, whose departure represents a club record sale for the Championship club, has signed a five-year contract at Spurs – who have a 12-month extension option. Sessegnon, who has won ten caps for his country at under-21 level, has been with Fulham since the age of eight and broke into the first-team as a sixteen year-old under Slavisa Jokanovic. He leaves Craven Cottage having made 120 appearances for the Whites, scoring 25 goals, and helping Fulham win the 2018 Championship play-off final, when he set up Tom Cairney’s winner against Aston Villa at Wembley.
Sessegnon, who made 26 appearances in the top flight last season and scored twice, stayed with his boyhood club despite interest from leading Premier League and European clubs but his departure was inevitable after they were relegated last April. Depending on his success at Spurs, the fee could raise to £30m with add-ons.
Fulham vice chairman and director of football, Tony Khan, said:
“Ryan Sessegnon has grown up at Fulham and grown as a footballer under the guidance of our academy and the managers he’s worked with here. I had hoped that Ryan would be with us as we began this season’s campaign and for many seasons beyond it, and I did everything I could to try to make that happen. But when a player expresses a desire to explore a new opportunity, and our attempts to change his mind are unsuccessful, then the priority is making sure that we get the right deal for the club. That is what I’ve done, I believe that we’ve done the best deal possible for Fulham. We wish Ryan well on his next chapter and we’ll continue working to get the club back to the Premier League.”
Onomah, a former England under-21 international who played for Aston Villa against Fulham at Wembley in the 2018 play-off final, spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 15 Championship appearances.
