Northern Ireland international Oliver Norwood played a pivotal role in Fulham’s promotion from the Championship in 2018, despite never being a regular in Slavisa Jokanovic’s first team. The biggest compliment you can pay the former Manchester United trainee was that he slotted seamlessly into the engine room, whichever one of Kevin McDonald, Stefan Johansen or Tom Cairney was out. Norwood was a reliable penalty taker – something of a rarity at Craven Cottage – but his reading of the game and range of passing proved just as valuable. At the end of a tense play-off final against Aston Villa, he came off the bench to judge a tackle on Conor Hourihane to perfect as Fulham held out to secure a return to the Premier League at Wembley.
