Austrian international Michael Madl helped to stem the leaks in a fragile Fulham defence when he arrived from Sturm Graz, initially on loan, in January 2016. His assured debut at Queens Park Rangers delivered Slavisa Jokanovic’s first win as Fulham manager and he quickly became a dependable member of the back four. Madl’s reading of the game and his relishing of a physical battle made him the perfect defender in England’s second tier – and he only lost his place once Jokanovic moved Denis Odoi to partner Tim Ream in central defence. Madl joined Austria Wien in January 2018.
