Felix Magath’s terrible tenure at Craven Cottage included one relegation but very nearly led to another. The first German to manage in the Premier League was an undoubted failure: trying to rule his squad with fear and memorably insisting that Brede Hangeland should treat an injury with cheese whilst phoning his mother. It was difficult to decipher much of a method in Magath’s madness, especially when Fulham floundered to pick up just one point from their first seven matches in the Championship. His departure seemed an awful long time in coming after a string of shocking displays.
