Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have both submitted deadline day offers to sign Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey, according to Sky Sports News.
Aston Villa made an audacious attempt to hijack Liverpool’s summer-long pursuit of the American international but withdraw from the running when Dempsey made it clear he was not interested in a move to Villa Park. Sunderland have registered their interest in signing the 29 year-old, but the bidding war is set to ramp up in the final hours of the transfer window after Tottenham and Liverpool tabled offers for Dempsey.
Liverpool have made no secret of their desire to acquire the Texas-born midfielder, who scored 23 goals in all competitions for Fulham last season, but their relationship with the Cottagers have deteriorated badly during a fractious summer. Dempsey has made it clear he would like to move to Anfield but is also open to joining Tottenham, who have made their move via Daniel Levy this afternoon.
Dempsey has not played for Fulham this season after informing Martin Jol of his desire to leave Craven Cottage earlier this summer and the club have fined the midfielder for failing to turn up for training.
