This piece draws attention to the fact that Vic Buckingham was given permission by Ajax to become the new Fulham manager, after Bedford Jezzard stepped down, on January 21st 1965.
There’s a great quote from Tommy Trinder too:
He was the one man we could find who was big enough to take complete control and stand up to speak for Fulham – a job I’m sick of doing.
They give Buckingham the credit for introducing the ‘Total Football’ philosophy with which Johan Cryuff lated wowed the world. Buckingham took charge of Fulham for 126 games, winning 36, drawing 28 and losing 62.
My addled brain has reminded me that his name was Vic.
But there again i am certain of nothing these days!
You are absolutely right Mike. Now corrected.
I didn’t realise he’d arrived from Ajax. Seems a strange move for that period when I would have thought Ajax were a bigger team than us.
Am I right that he was never a popular manager at Fulham? Eventually saw us relegated from the top flight and sold many of our better players.
He was a disaster.
