West Brom have confirmed that they are in talks with Fulham over the sale of Jonathan Greening and expect the deal to be completed in the next couple of days.
On the Albion official website, Roberto Di Matteo explains his decision to leave Greening out of the squad for their game at Peterborough last night and praised the midfielder’s attitude, with similar quotes to the one that appeared in the morning papers.
West Brom fans must be getting sick of the sight of Fulham, though. In three successive seasons, the Whites have signed Diomansy Kamara, Zoltan Gera (on a free) and now, in all likelihood, Greening as well.

This will be another good signing but I’m again finding it hard to place him. I suppose he will come in at the centre for cover for Murphy and Etuhu.
Should be the back up for Murphy I think, which is good because that’s one place where we really don’t have any cover.
Hmm, not sure this is a good signing. I did watch a lot of West Brom last season and I´m not convinced that Greeing is good enough for a team like Fulham. Decent back up at best. But think you should look elsewhere if you have the money to spend.
Sad to see him go. A good passer of the ball, rarely loses it or gives it away. However if we can get £4m plus then it’s probably a good deal all round.
Got to agree with Baggie Bird here. A classy player – and by all accounts a top professional – who values keeping hold of the ball. Exactly what we need, especially as we’d be a bit stumped if Murphy got injured.
A few people have commented about the price we’re paying but the market makes it difficult to get a good midfielder from the Championship at a knockdown price. I’d be delighted with this deal if it goes through.
I think its a lot of money for just a decent player. And just cause he is english you have to pay a lot more. Think you could do a lot better with £4 million and that is lots of money to splash out on a back up player.
“Classy player” .. hmm .. we have diffrent standards of what kind of players who deserve that kind of description Dan. 🙂
Sorry, but anyone who questions this move knows little about football. With Greening, Duff & Riise…our midfield is at a whole other level now. We went from having no depth to having a ton of depth. Hate to get too far ahead of myself, but don’t be shocked if we finish Top 10 once again and make a decent Cup run.
Careful Jason. Yes, we’ve got some depth in midfield now but I’d imagine that Bjorn Helge Riise will still need a bit more time to adjust to the English game.
There’s a lot of strong sides competing for top half spots in the league this season (I think Sunderland could go well, despite their defeat last night) and the plethora of games we’ll have to play might hinder our chances of doing as well as we did last year.
You’re a pessimist though. We need less of that and more optimism. We gotta stop thinking like a Championship side and start looking at our club as being the Premiership side they are.
We could win the League and 60% of Fulham fans would still have a “small club” mentality and constantly worry about relegation. At some point you need to get over that and see all these moves as being extremely positive. I remember 2 years ago getting RIPPED big time at Craven Cottage Newsround & Fulham USA because I knew despite how things were looking, we would not be relegated. I never get credit but I’m right way more often than I’m wrong and I’m tried of not patting myself on the back. So now I will allow my ego to inflate and at the end of this season, will scream from the rafters that I was right, everyone else was wrong and be damn proud while doing it.
Mate, I’m not a pessimist by any stretch, I’m actually very optimistic and want Fulham to do as well as they can. This is a real opportunity now this season – I’m just a bit wary of jinxing it at the moment. I think we really have a chance to push on and consolidate our place in the top half and establishing ourselves across Europe as well. I just hope the board are as ambitious as Roy, yourself and I.
Good prediction about avoiding relegation by the way, I’d almost lost belief by April that season.
