Brian McBride’s late goal ensured that the Chicago Fire ended their run of five straight draws with a 2-0 success against Toronto earlier tonight.

McBride made sure of the points with an easy tap in nine minutes from time after Stefan Frei had saved well from John Thorrington. The ball ran loose and Mike Banner found the former Fulham captain, who made no mistake with the finish.

Chicago took the lead moments after their defensive midfielder Logan Pause seemed to get away with handling the ball in his own box. The visitors broke up field and Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s clever through ball found Chris Rolfe who cleverly chipping the advancing goalkeeper before guiding home his second goal of the season.

The victory takes Chicago clear at the top of the Eastern Conference, a point ahead of DC United. Toronto are a further two points back in third, having played a game more than the top two.
