You might have missed Javier Casquero’s cheeky attempt to emulate Antonin Panenka go horribly wrong at the Bernabeu last week. A gripping game between Real Madrid and Getafe was overshadowed on this shores by the goal fest at Anfield and Casquero’s inexplicable failure to hammer home the late spot-kick that would have gone a long way to securing Getafe’s survival was just as strange as Pepe’s sending off moments earlier. Maybe one directly influenced the other.

Fredorrarci at the Run of the Play has a wonderful post exploring the folly of trying to be a little too clever. Beautifully written, it’s well worth a look.
