It is nice to see that in the midst of a fine run in the league and that memorable draw with Chelsea at the weekend, Roy Hodgson has kept his feet firmly on the ground.
You’d expect nothing less from an experienced manager, I suppose, but after the rollercoaster ride that was last season it seems prudent to put safety first. Clint Dempsey recently talked up our chances of getting into Europe but Hodgson has a more realistic target in mind:
We’re a long way from the 40 points that we’re targeting. It’s important that we don’t, for one minute, start to believe it’s going to be easier than it’s going to be.
Just did a little totting up of how many points we could realistically expect. I think 40pts is definitely achievable. I could see us ending with around 50pts, leaving us comfortably mid table.
I have a feeling that this years table will end up looking a lot like the 2002/03 table where west ham went down with 42 points. Lets hope we can keep up our current pace!
I’m with you Alex. I think we could reach around 50-52pts if we keep picking up points away from home. My tally included a lot of away draws so if we could nick a few wins on the road then we might well be higher up the table.
It does look very tight, though, which means Hodgson’s 40 point target might need to be scaled up slightly.
