Lawrie Sanchez was a surprise appointment to succeed the sacked Chris Coleman in April 2007 after impressively reviving Northern Ireland’s international fortunes. Lured back to London initially on a part-time basis by the prospect of managing in the Premier League, he just about kept Fulham up thanks to Clint Dempsey’s first goal for the club securing a precious win over an understrength Liverpool in May 2007. Sanchez reshaped the squad over the summer, bringing in a number of trusted Northern Irish lieutenants, but was sacked after a home defeat by Newcastle with the Whites in the relegation zone – having won only two matches all season.
