You could see why Chris Coleman wanted to sign Claus Jensen for just £1.25m from Charlton in the summer of 2004. The Danish playmaker was a midfield maestro on his day, frustrated by his lack of progress in south London, and scorer of some sensational goals. Jensen’s promise flickered fitfully at Fulham, he chipped in a superb opener at Highbury early in his career and scored the winner against his old club later that season, but injuries ruined his chances of playing regular football. Once Coleman was replaced by Lawrie Sanchez, Jensen’s creativity was never going to gel with the new manager’s more direct approach – and the Dane, who represented his country at both the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004, was released in May 2007.
