A tall and powerful centre half, Ian McGuckin signed for Fulham for £75,000 from Hartlepool in the summer of 1997 following promotion from Division Three. He had made more 150 appearances since turning professional with Pools but never played a first-team game for the Whites after struggling with back and knee injuries.
