Fulham signed Alain Goma from Newcastle United for a club record fee of £4m.

The French international defender has agreed personal terms with the First Division leaders and passed a medical. The deal to bring the 28 year-old to Craven Cottage surpasses the £3m that the Whites paid Sunderland for midfielder Lee Clark in July 1999.

Jean Tigana has been keen to bolster his defensive options ahead of promotion to the Premiership after captain Chris Coleman suffered a double leg break in a devastating car crash on New Year’s Day.

Fulham managing director Michael Fiddy said:

“The club is looking forward to welcoming Alain to Fulham, once he has completed a medical. His record has been proven at both domestic and international levels and we are sure he will become a great asset to the team for the rest of the season and for years to come. Alain’s signing is indicative of the ambition of the football club to achieve the chairman’s vision of both Premiership and European honours in the future.”

Goma joined Newcastle for £4.7million in July 1999 after spending 10 years with French outfit Auxerre.
