Experienced ball-winner Glenn Cockerill was reunited with his former Southampton team-mate Micky Adams after moving to Craven Cottage in the summer of 1996. It was a magnanimous move from Adams as Cockerill had effectively ended his playing career with a leg-breaking tackle at Leyton Orient the previous season. Cockerill remains the oldest Fulham debutant, aged 37, but his wealth of experience – which included lining up against Fulham for Lincoln City in their 1982 Third Division promotion decider – proved invaluable in the Whites’ promotion season. Cockerill made 34 appearances as Fulham finished second, scoring his only goal for the club in a 4-0 thrashing of Scarborough, but became Adams’ assistant twice in succession at Brentford and Brighton before managing Woking and Winchester City.
