Fulham have agreed a deal to sign the Southampton goalkeeper Maik Taylor for £700,000, according to the Daily Mirror.

The tabloid also reveals that the Whites will pay the Saints a further £300,000 – taking the total transfer fee to a £1m – should the 26 year-old make forty league appearances for the club. Ray Wilkins and Kevin Keegan have now spent more than £3m in six weeks since taking over at Craven Cottage to strengthen their squad for a second successive promotion push.

Taylor is the latest new arrival following in the footsteps of £1.1m striker Paul Peschisolido, who signed from West Bromwich Albion last month. The goalkeeper was one of Graeme Souness’ final signings at Southampton but he has found his first-team opportunities limited at the Dell following the fine form of Paul Jones.

Taylor will undergo a medical today at Motspur Park but will be unavailable for Sunday’s televised FA Cup first round tie at non-league Margate. South African international Andre Arendse is set to be in goal against the part-timers but Taylor is expected to be installed as Wilkins’ number one – perhaps as soon as Tuesday night’s meeting with York City.
