Full-back Micky Adams has been appointed as Fulham’s player-manager for the remainder of the season after Ian Branfoot was moved upstairs to become general manager of the Third Division strugglers.

Former Southampton boss Branfoot, who has been in charge at Craven Cottage since June 1994, told the Fulham board last week that he had the taken the Whites are far as he could. Branfoot had come under vocal pressure from sections of the Fulham support as the side drifted towards the bottom of the pyramid, with matters coming to a head after his side were beaten by bottom of the league Torquay United earlier this month to drop to their lowest position in the club’s history, 91st of the 92nd English professional clubs.

Adams, who has served as player-coach since arriving in SW6 from Southampton in July 1994, becomes the youngest manager in the English game. He has taken charge of the last two Fulham fixtures with Branfoot ill and now faces the stiff task of trying to navigate the Whites to safety.
