A flawless Fulham side cruised to their second successive 5-1 victory over bottom-of-the-table Aldershot at Craven Cottage this evening.
The Whites were in command from the first whistle and centre forward Andy Sayer opened the scoring with a superb solo strike ten minutes before half time. Sayer then turned provider for John Marshall to double the lead with an emphatic right-footed finish seven minutes later. Gary Barnett’s first goal of the season made it three twenty minutes into the second period with an unerring finish after good play from Rob Wilson.
Sayer’s second of the afternoon arrived with twenty minutes left after excellent hold-up work from strike partner Colin Gordon before Jeff Eckhardt made it five by converting Wilson’s header. Aldershot had hardly had a shot in the first eighty minutes but did grab a consolation when substitute Giogio Mazzon beat Jim Stannard from close range.
Fulham manager Ray Lewington said afterwards: “The old Fulham would have lost 1-0 after winning 5-1 last week, so I was a bit worried. There was no way I could bring either of the substitutes on – it would have been unfair on the players who started who were superb!”
