Fulham went out of the League Cup at the hands of their local rivals Brentford after a dramatic extra-time finale that saw their veteran Welsh international centre forward stretched off injured.
The Bees eventually broke the deadlock in a tight local derby four minutes into the first period of extra time when Richard Cadette placed a precise pass into the path of his strike partner Gary Blissett, who blasted an unstoppable left-footed finish past Fulham goalkeeper Jim Stannard. Stannard had earlier produced a string of fine saves to keep out three shots from Brentford captain Keith Jones.
Cadette, who became Brentford’s record signing when he joined from Sheffield United in July, rattled the crossbar from close range after excellent play from fellow new boy Neil Smillie. Davies, who had replaced winger Clive Walker at half time, was carried off after going down into discomfort in the Brentford penalty area, three minutes later as an evening that promised so much for the Whites finished in such frustrating fashion.
