A first half finish from Gary Barnett fired Fulham to a crucial victory over struggling York City in the battle against relegation at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

York’s defence twice failed to clear an inswinging corner from Rod Braithwaite and the deadly Barnett buried an emphatic effort from close range. The Whites could have enjoyed a much less nerve-shredding success had midfielder Leo Donellan not missed a penalty four minutes after the interval.

Ray Lewington professed himself delighted with a third straight home win which does the Cottagers’ fight against the drop no harm at all.

FULHAM: Vaughan; Oakes, Hicks, Hopkins, Carr, Scott, Donnellan, Lewington, Barnett, Brathwaite (Davies 70), Coney.

GOAL: Barnett (37).
