Cult hero Roger Brown joined Fulham from First Division Northampton City in March 1980 for £100,000 but he got injured during his debut against Chelsea and missed the rest of the season. He was an ever-present in Malcolm Macdonald’s Division Three promotion-winning 1981-82 side, scoring twelve goals including the crucial equaliser against Lincoln City at the end of the campaign. Brown didn’t miss a game as the Whites went close to a second successive promotion, forging a formidable partnership with Tony Gale at the heart of the back four. A falling out with Macdonald saw Brown return to former club Bournemouth for a cut-price £35,000 and he sadly died in his native Tamworth aged only 58.
