Kevin Lock, who had been man of the match in the 1975 FA Cup final against Fulham, dropped down a division to join the Whites from West Ham United in May 1978 for £60,000. He started at the heart of the defence but was moved to left back and became a regular fixture in the side over seven seasons until he struggled with injuries towards the end of his time at Craven Cottage. He was a key part of the side that won promotion from Division Three in 1982 and went close to going up again the following season. A set-piece specialist, Lock was one of the most reliable penalty takers in Fulham’s history, memorably scoring at Anfield and at the Cottage in the epic League Cup tussle with Liverpool in 1983. He made 236 appearances for Fulham, scoring 29 goals, before joining Southend United – where he began a coaching career – in July 1985.
